When I return to school the next day, Wednesday, I head straight to film class. I’m early, but Miss Flora is already there.

“Thank you so much for the letter,” I say. “I think I got my submissions in on time. I totally dropped the ball on asking for the letter. Thank God you remembered and then offered.”

She smiles and then frowns. “It’s none of my business, but I’m worried about your project with Hunter.”

“I am too.” I say. “Can I submit the project solo? I mean is that allowed?”

She purses her lips together and then nods. “I think in this case we can make an exception. And it should be fine to do on your own. And then you don’t have to worry because the final project is actually a solo project, but you can do both that way.”

“Thanks.” I don’t tell her I’ve already written a script for the slapstick.

At lunch, I meet the girls and we go off campus to the taco stand overlooking the beach.

“Girl!” Coral says. “We’ve missed you.”

Paige looks right at me. “I’m gonna guess it all has to do with Hunter?”

I nod. I feel tears prick at my eyes.

“I’m sorry he’s acting like this,” Emma says. I look over at her. I’ve pretty much kept most of it to myself but, apparently, all my friends know.

Paige explains. “He came home drunk and his Dad went ballistic.”

“What night?”

I try not to ask.

“Last night.”

I guess he’d gotten away with it for a while.

“They had a blow out and Hunter took off. He never came home. Was he at your house?”

“Nope. Not last night.”

“His Jeep is still there, so I don’t know. I thought maybe you’d come to get him.”

I shake my head. And suddenly I’m filled with jealousy. It could be Dex or Devin or any other guy friend who got him, so I’m not sure where the feeling stem from. What I do know is that my once reliable boyfriend is no longer reliable and probably not even my boyfriend anymore.

Hunter calls me right when the bell rings at the end of the school day. He must’ve been waiting.

“Hey,” I say, wary.

His voice sounds hoarse. “I fucked up,” he says.

“Yeah.”

“Even more than flaking on you.”

My heart is racing and I can feel it in my throat. “What happened?”

“I know I said I wasn’t going to drink …” he leaves it at that.

It takes me a minute to compute. “Wait? You were on a bender?”

He grunts. “Worse.”

“My God. Where were you?”

“I don’t want to tell you. But I never want to lie to you.”

Now, my heart sinks. I close my eyes. “Better get it over with.”

He clears his throat and I hold my breath. I have no idea what he’s going to say. No fucking idea. But I know it’s going to be bad.

And it is.

“I was with Ava.”

I feel my knees grow weak.

He speaks quickly. “But it’s not like what you think. We’re just friends. It’s just that she was the only way I could get …”

“Get what, Hunter?”

“She has a … dealer.
